Pool to Pond Conversion
Our goal here was to transform this dilapidated old pool into a usable low maintenance water feature that could be used as a focal point in our yard. This water feature and the contents of this page have been published in numerous magazines.
Step 1: Dilapidated PoolThis pool saw many, many children running splashing and playing about, but after many years of use, age had taken it’s toll.

Step 2: Filling The HoleBecause the pool was so deep, we decided to fill it in some so that there would not be the 20,000 gallons to treat.

Step 3: Construction the Peninsula & PlantersTo create a little more interest to the feature and to try to make it look a little less like a pool, we created planting shelves and a peninsula.

Step 4: Liner & UnderlaymentAfter creating the substructure of the pond with the blocks from the surrounding wall, we covered it all with underlayment and then liner. Notice the areas along each side of the peninsula for plant pockets.

Step 5: The Completed ProjectAfter much work and many renovations to it, the final design includes a 75' stream winding up the hillside to a patio. This tends to be our favorite spot in the summer afternoons for cookies and coffee. This pond has been home to several different groups of fish, from our original Koi (which are no in the gazebo pond), to the baby koi, to the goldfish and Shubunkins, to its curent residents, Golden Orfes.
